Chad: We’re having brownies and ice cream for dessert.  But you don’t really like those.
Grace: Yes I do!
Chad: Nah.
Grace: I can take off this shirt, you know.
She was wearing her “My dad is totally awesome” t-shirt.

Ada: Wait, I don’t want to go to Culver’s for lunch.  I want to go to that restaurant to the left of Culver’s.
Me: Spyro’s?  That is to the left of Culver’s.  Good job, Ada!
Ada: I know.  I’m getting really good at left and right.

Eight Years in the Making

  • I had three babies in 29 months.
  • I was pregnant 27 out of 38 months.
  • I had three children in diapers for eight months.
  • In my basement I have or had three cribs, three reversible car seats, three umbrella strollers and more…
  • Between my mom and I we had four pack-n-plays.
  • I currently have 6 booster seats, a set in each car.
  • Side note: this is why I was very diligent about getting them to sleep through the night (which to me means 12 hours between feedings).  If not I would have completely lost it long ago!
I tell you

Bedroom Time

We have that fairly regularly around here.  If the kids are fighting a lot, or pushing the boundaries a lot, or the noise level is rising drastically…. I declare “Bedroom Time”.  They all have to go to their own rooms for an undecided amount of time with their doors shut.  They can be loud if they want, they can listen to music if they want, whatever.  They just have to have their door shut.  After a while, if they ask to play together, they can, but doors still have to be shut.  This accomplishes a few things.

1. It gives … Read the rest

Grace: People live in France, but speak French.  They live in China, but speak Chinese.  They live in Mexico, but speak Mexican.
Me: Well, they speak Spanish.
Ada: Me too, I speak Spanish.  I should go there with Rich sometime because we both speak Spanish.

Ada is introducing herself to a new friend at Chick-Fil-A…
Ada: My name is Ada.  It’s nice to meet you.  Do you want to play after you eat?
Seriously, EVERYONE is a potential friend for her.  This seems harmless enough until she goes into the bathroom with an unknown 4 year-old Read the rest

My Most Recent Holy Spirit Conviction

I was driving to Indy today and praying for a safe, uneventful trip.  Then I got a whisper.  “Are you doing your part to have a safe trip?”  Crap.  No.  Teenage readers: you might want to stop reading now.  You see, I give myself about 10% over the speed limit.  So if I’m driving on I-69, with a speed limit of 70, I’m going about 75-77 mph.  I’ve heard other people’s stories about why they decided to stop speeding (or better…why they never started), and I was never impacted.  Today I was.  Here is why this is important to me.… Read the rest

Adventures in School Supply Shopping

I don’t know what your experience is with this, but here was mine this year:

Ada had a massive fit (which for Ada looks like shutting down and no longer speaking except for the occasional “I DON’T LIKE SHARING!” at random times) because she learned all of her school supplies are shared whereas Grace and Eli’s are theirs, with their names on them.  This did not go over well and lasted all morning even though I told her we were done talking about it.

I took Grace and Eli shopping for new gym shoes, and realized that I really hate … Read the rest

Ada: I had a dream last night that I was in Dragon Land.  It was an awesome dream.  (whispers) It was great!
Her whisper at the end reminded me of Brick on The Middle.  It’s a really funny show if you haven’t seen it.

Chad and I were talking with Ada about salvation, baptism, what it means to follow Jesus, etc. to see if she is read to be baptized this summer…
Ada: I love Jesus.  And I believe in what He says.  Most of the time.
Me: Well, when don’t you believe in what He says?… Read the rest

Yet Another Reason

why Chad and I are a good fit.

Chad is very future-minded, while I live in the present.  He sets the goals, I maintain the functioning budget so we reach the goals.  We have the next six or so steps already figured out for our debt snowball, but he’s the one who looks at it regularly, not me.

While we were driving to pick up the kids from my parents’ on Sunday he said, “I’d like to set some more financial goals for after we’ve finished our debt snowball.  We’ve just casually talked about what vacation we want to go … Read the rest

My Battle Over Emotions

I don’t like to cry.  I’m ok with others crying, but I don’t like it when it happens to me.  It makes me feel like I’m not in control of my own body.  It’s the same reason I only have one drink when I decide to have one.  I need to be in control of myself.

This Sunday at church was Pastor Stan’s first Sunday back after having a brain tumor removed.  We were going to do a song called “Forever Reign”, which we had done the Sunday after we found out his tumor was Stage 4 cancer.  As I … Read the rest
