Do not be anxious about anything…

…but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving in your heart, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:6-7

I’ve repeated those verses to myself over and over again, focusing on each section.  Prayer and petition.  Thanksgiving.  Present your requests.  God’s peace.  Over and over again.  I love, love this scripture.  It’s a little more difficult to help your eight-year-old grasp the concept.

Grace has been in therapy for a couple months now for her extreme emotions and her inability to function … Read the rest

Something’s a-brewing…

My kids have been pretty good lately.  They haven’t been fighting much, I’ve been able to just let them play unsupervised, the house is just calmer in general.   And then…

Tuesday night we were leaving the house for an appointment and we were teetering the on time/late line.  Ada had put on her ballerina dress, and I was irritated that I had to go upstairs to oversee her changing.  It was then that I realized they had sprayed her room with Febreeze.  A lot of Febreeze.  They emptied the Febreeze can (those of you who’ve tuned in for a while … Read the rest

Two Glimpses

This afternoon I was helping in Ada’s classroom.  At the end of the day we went outside for recess.  She was being silly on the monkey bars, and looked up at me while she was hanging upside down.  She said, “Mom, I like the way I am.  I’m glad God made me like this.”  She was very matter-of-fact, just enjoying the afternoon sunshine and the ability to hang upside down and have fun.

Oh sweet Ada, I’m glad God made you like this too.  You make me smile every day.  You confuse me and stretch me as a mom, and Read the rest

I Am the Mother of a Boy

  • I wore a Captain Rex band-aid today.
  • I know who Captain Rex is.
  • I know that Ewoks are from Endor and Wookies are from Kashyyyk (sorry spell check).
  • I am quite good at assembling Legos.
  • I don’t even look in the toilet anymore, I just flush it when I walk by the kids’ bathroom.
  • Any day of the week, one or both of our bathrooms will smell like a men’s room.
  • Bloody noses don’t phase me.
  • I’m learning the difference between a force out and when you have to tag the runner.
  • I shuffle my feel when walking in his

Eight Years in the Making

  • I had three babies in 29 months.
  • I was pregnant 27 out of 38 months.
  • I had three children in diapers for eight months.
  • In my basement I have or had three cribs, three reversible car seats, three umbrella strollers and more…
  • Between my mom and I we had four pack-n-plays.
  • I currently have 6 booster seats, a set in each car.
  • Side note: this is why I was very diligent about getting them to sleep through the night (which to me means 12 hours between feedings).  If not I would have completely lost it long ago!
I tell you

I Lost My Little Girl

We went to Pine Lake Saturday afternoon for about three hours and had a lot of fun.  Well, the ten or so minutes where we couldn’t find Ada weren’t so fun.  In the shallow part of the lake there are two kids’ slides.  Chad and I were in the water watching the kids go down the slides over and over again.  Then Chad said, “Where’s Ada?”  I looked around, not worried, this happens all the time when you’re out-numbered.  But as the seconds passed my worry grew.  Chad got out of the water and looked around the slides.  He looked … Read the rest

Camp Lakewood

Grace went to Camp Lakewood last week with our church for the first time.  This camp is for kids going into 3rd-5th grade.  She was one of the youngest and I swear she was the smallest.  She was “excited and nervous” about leaving us for 5 days (and even bigger, 5 nights!), but decided she would do it.  We went shopping for everything she would need, bought fun things to make it even more exciting and special, and didn’t talk about it too much if we saw the nervous part gaining a grip on the excited part.

We drove her … Read the rest

My Ada

At work today, I was preparing the media for Sunday and I came across some Father’s Day Quotes from two years ago.  I found this little gem from Ada:

Question: Why did God make dads?
Ada: Because God makes people.

She was three.  Three.  She’s so logical and literal.  For a long time she wouldn’t name her stuffed animals or dolls because “they’re just toys”.  Other kids answered this question with things like: To help us, and To teach us, and To love us.  Not Ada.  And she is just quick.  She has an answer for everything.  Even when

Only in Esmond

We were playing outside last night at my parents’ house.  They live out in the country in northern Illinois.  We were in the yard catching lightning bugs when suddenly two people came down the road riding horses.  I had to laugh as I imagined myself telling this story to my Fort Wayne friends.  Seeing people riding horses on the road isn’t strange or unusual where my parents live.  There are farms everywhere, in fact the one where these horses are from is just across the road from my parents.

Anyway, we saw two people coming down the road on horses.  … Read the rest
