On her way to the bathroom…
Ada: I’m going to walk/jog because I have to go badly.
I love that she actually used the phrase “walk/jog” and that she has such a great grasp on adverbs at 5. 🙂

We were having a lovely dinner with some friends…
Ada: Zac, Santa isn’t real.
I was in shock, Zac was laughing to the point of tears, and thankfully his small children seemed oblivious.  I had a talk with Ada the next day…
Me: Ada, remember we’ve told you – you can’t tell kids about Santa.  You have to … Read the rest

On our way to church…
Ada: I wish we had church at our house.
Grace: Maybe we could have a kids’ office!
Eli: Yeah!  And we could play there whenever we wanted!
Grace: No, we would have to do work.  Working at a church is a lot of work.
Eli: Well, mom would just do it.
Ada: Yeah.
Grace: No, we would have to help!  There’s a lot of work to do at a church!
So here are my take-aways.  1) Maybe I talk about work too much in front of them. 2) Read the rest

Ah, Weddings

I love weddings.  Partially because we don’t take the kids (unless they’re in it, of course) and it’s one awesomely long date for Chad and I that includes dinner and dancing, and I totally geek out over getting all girled up.  But I also love weddings because they make me reflect on marriage.

Chad and I had the privilege of going to the wedding yesterday of our pastor’s daughter.  I thought about our wedding – I was 19 and Chad was 20!  We were SOOO young.  We knew this was the right choice, but seriously, we were young.  We had … Read the rest

Eli: Mom, you were right.
I don’t remember what preceded this, and honestly it doesn’t matter.
Chad: Mom’s usually right.
Eli: Well really, mom’s always right.
And then the heavens opened up and all the angels joined together in singing the Hallelujah Chorus…

Ada: Here are some things about me: I’m chubby, cute, funny, aaaaand smart.
Eli: And adorable.
Ada: Yes.  That’s what chubby means.

Eli: That babysitter puts me in time out.
Ada: Only when you’re mean to us.
Eli: ADA!  I know.
Ada: We don’t like it when you’re mean to us.… Read the rest

Choose Your Words Wisely – the Conclusion

So I wrote last week about Ada telling me she didn’t want to see me anymore, and that I gave her what she asked for – somewhat.  I couldn’t literally not see her.  But I didn’t do anything for her from 3:45 when we got home from school until about 6:00 when it was supper time.  Whenever she called me or asked for something, I simply replied, “I’m sorry, but you said you didn’t want to see me anymore.”  (One of the times that I said that to her she replied, “But I meanted a different day, not today!”  … Read the rest

Choose Your Words Wisely

When Ada gets mad, she stays there.  She sets up camp and has no intention of leaving.  Every word out of her mouth and movement of her body reflects her mood.

Normally after I pick her up from school, we get in Grace and Eli’s carpool line and I let her sit in the front with me.  Today I asked if she was buckled, she said yes, then I realize she actually wasn’t.  I told her the consequence for her lie and not being safe would be that she couldn’t sit in the front with me and would have to … Read the rest

Me: Did you wash your hands?
Ada: Yes.
Me: Are you sure?
Ada: Yes.
Me: Please don’t lie to me.
Eli: Sorry mom (on his way to the bathroom).
I wasn’t even talking to him!  I love accidentally getting a confession!

Ada has started using finger quotes, incorrectly.
– Our coats are “the same”. (they were completely the same)
– Grandpa left his soap at “our house”. (he did leave it at our house)

Chad was trying to explain what a “soul” is at dinner the other night
Chad: When God created … Read the rest

Grace’s Conference

Grace is in 3rd grade.  Her teacher said she has improved a lot in the last few weeks with handling her emotions.  (YAY!)  I shared with her that she is in therapy for an anxiety disorder, and that math is one of her triggers.  So her solution was to send home math homework in an envelope so Grace didn’t even have to see it.  Awesome!  Thank you.  Problem and solution.  She also noticed that Grace seems to do better when she is in close proximity, so she moved her to the front of the room.  Again, problem and solution!  I … Read the rest

Eli’s Conference

Eli is in 2nd Grade.  Our biggest concern with him is that he struggles with reading.  Thankfully, they know this and have put him in a reading group to get him the extra help he needs.  I don’t LIKE that he needs extra help, but I DO like that they will do what is necessary to get him to where he needs to be with this.  I have already noticed a big improvement.  His teacher also said he struggles with focusing (Really? ELI?)  So he doesn’t have the grades he SHOULD have because he doesn’t always start his work right … Read the rest

Ada’s Conference

Last night was Ada’s Kindergarten conference, so I feel like we’re finally getting into the meat of things.  I LOVED our preschool, and the conferences are fine, but they’re more about if she can use scissors and how well she knows her shapes.

So here’s where I get to brag. 🙂  Ada is the most advanced reader in her class, and I really can’t take any credit for this.  The girl was just born smart.  She writes in complete sentences and spells really well.  She’s good at math, but doesn’t like doing it (surprise, surprise).  When asked if I had … Read the rest
