What I Do For A Living

I was talking with a friend of mine, and she was telling me of her schedule as a mom of 4.  She said, “It’s what I do for a living.”

It’s what I do for a living.

There’s a broad range of moms.  We do homeschool, private school, or public school.  We work full-time, part-time, or stay home and work harder.  We have one child, 3 7, or more.  We screw up.  We get it right. We do it day in and day out.

What do you do?  Do you just try to make it through the day?  To nap time?  Til daddy gets home?  That’s how I function more often than I’d care to admit.  Or, are you doing this for a living?  Are you future-minded, conscious of the fact that you are raising adults?

This thought  makes me think of employees.  There are employees who are just at their job temporarily, until something more attractive comes along.  They miss the bigger picture.  They’re not looking for how to better the company.  And then there are employees who love the company they work for.  They’re in a career.  They know where their career path is heading, and they do what’s necessary to get there.

So, Moms.  Is motherhood your job, or your career?  Is your career raising adults of character who love God and His people, or is your job made up of today’s little incidents that kind of made it suck?

If 0 is crappy job, and 10 is leading daily devotions with your children… I might be at a 4.  Some days I’m at 0, some days I’m at 7 or so.  I’m not naive enough to think that I can make it to 10 just with a smile and a prayer.  It’s going to take work.  Lots of consistent, daily, exhausting work.  So for now I’ll try to be a 5.  When I get that down, I’ll try for 6.  I want this to be what I do for a living, not my daily grind.  Baby steps.

  1. Janna-I love reading your blog. Thanks for sharing, keeping it real, and inspiring. You are an amazing mom!

  2. Whew…. this IS encouraging and inspiring today! Good stuff, friend! And hey, your oldest daughter is going to adopt every orphan from Haiti someday so you must be doing something right in your career! 😉

  3. I really like this too, Janna. Whenever I feel like I'm at a 0 – Josh is so wonderful about reminding me that I have THE MOST IMPORTANT career – raising up our 3 little blessings to release to the world as God followers. He encourages me to remain focused on our priorities and to keep plugging along – even if I feel that I'm not making progress – I am! 🙂
